SHILLONG, JAN 23: Security has been beefed up across the state including Shillong in view of the 24-hours bandh called by the proscribed HNLC during the Republic Day. The ensure that the Republic Day is celebrated without a hitch, security have been tightened, police officials said.
All police stations in different parts of the state have been sounded alert even as a regular coordination exercise with the BSF has been made ahead of the celebration, East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang said.
“The preparedness exercise actually started couple of weeks ago. But we have conducted an intensive security arrangement after the outfit had announced the bandh,” Kharkrang told newsmen.
Kharkhrang informed that extra officers and forces drawn from the police battalion have been deployed in the state’s capital, to ensure a peaceful Republic Day Celebration.
As a move to boycott the celebration, the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has called for a 24-hours bandh in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region 6pm of January 25 to 6 pm of January 26, demanding the centre to return back the ‘right to self existence’ of the Khasi indigenous land and its people.
Stating that though the HNLC is no longer a force to be reckon with, the SP, however, said, “But we cannot take the threats lightly.”- By Our Reporter
