Security dispatched to GH

SHILONG, FEB 1: A day after the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants disrupted the election rally of an Independent candidate in East Garo hills district, ten companies of paramilitary forces arrived in the state and were immediately dispatched to five districts in Garo hills for poll duty.

Most of the places in the five districts of Garo hills in the state are militants infested. There have been couple of incidents like attack in the house of former C&RD minister Saleng A Sangma, attack on his supporters, disruption of an election rally of former Meghalaya deputy chief minister and Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Deborah Marak that has heighten security concern in poll bound Meghalaya.

Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Kulbir Kishen told this reporter on Friday, “The paramilitary forces have already arrived in the state and dispatched to their designated areas”

The Meghalaya government had requested the centre for 76 companies of para-military forces to be deployed in the state to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections especially in the militants infested areas of Garo hills region and other areas considered as “sensitive”.

The ten companies that arrived on Friday is the first batch  Kishen informed each district have been given two companies of the para-military forces and more will be send later.

Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Naik had recently said that he hoped the central government will be allotting 76 companies as requested by the Meghalaya government so that elections process can be conducted in an effective manner without feeling the pinch for more security forces especially in the sensitive areas of the state.- By Our Reporter
