Shillong: Two more teams from Meghalaya are heading for the Himalayas to take part in one of India’s toughest and most demanding motorsport rally, the Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya which will kick-start on the first week of October.
Whereas “Team Steroid” of the Ropmay brothers have opted for the adventure category, “Team Meghalaya” is competing in the “Xtreme” category which is the toughest of the lot and is open only to those 4-wheeler drivers who have prior rallying experience and have competed in one of the earlier editions of the Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya or Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm Rally.
Driver Chibor Wahlang of “Team Meghalaya” has the experience as he had competed in previous rallies and won. His brother Sambor Wahlang, will be the navigator, while driver Damebanshan Dkhar along with his navigator Edmund Sutnga will be supporting Chibor Wahlang.
“Having two cars in “Team Meghalaya” gives us more chances of winning,” said Chibor, adding that although they have not gone for the reconnoiter trip, “we will do our best to win and bring back laurels to the state.”
The rally will commence 6th Oct till the 13th October and participants will be driving through some of the world’s highest motorable roads and passes in the Himalayas like Jalori Pass, Rohtang Pass, Kunzum La, Baralacha La, Tanglang La & Khardung La, through the inhospitable terrains in the Lahual and Spiti valleys in the Ladakh region.
Most of the drive is through boulders, snow capped peaks, gushing streams and at times, temperature below minus twenty degree Celsius. On an average, a participant covers a distance of three hundred kilometers every day in this approximately 2500-kilometer and week-long motoring event. – By Joe Thangkhiew
