Science centre tourists’ spot

SHILLONG, FEB 25: The state government is aiming to promote the Shillong Science Centre (SSC), located in the prestigious NEHU’s campus, as one of the tourist destinations in the state.

“Our goal is to turn the Shillong Science Centre into a tourist destination and promote it in the tourist map of the country,” Science & Technology Cell Planning Department, Research Officer and In-charge of SSC, H Nongbri told reporters at a press conference on Thursday.

The Centre, which is going to celebrate its 10 years of journey in promoting science on February 26 and 27, have been visited by over 1.17 lakh visitors.

“We also have around 50, 000 non ticketed visitors visiting the centre besides quite a number of schools which includes from rural areas of the state,” Nongbri said.

Informing that a Digital Planetarium and an Innovation Hub is still being constructed and is expected to be completed within a year, he said, “With this, our science centre will not be less than any other centres in the country.”

According to him, the department is also contemplating to bring aquarium and time machine, geo gallery and non-conventional park in the centre.

Meanwhile, he informed that the decade journey of the Shillong Science Centre will be celebrated along with the National Science Day at the Convention Hall, NEHU Campus, Mawlai from February 26 to 27.

Organized by the State Council of Science, Technology & Environment (SCSTE) in collaboration with the SSC, the celebration will see participation  by over 300 students from across the 39 blocks of the state.

The opening ceremony will be inaugurated by chief minister Mukul Sangma.

“The objective of the celebration is to bring Science to the centre stage and to highlight the contribution of science to human kind,” he said.

Various activities like painting competition, open quiz, debate competition, essay competition, science exhibition by scientific institutions, science popular lectures, night sky viewing, science film shows, eco games, marathon and placard rally, all confined to the theme “Science for Development” will be the highlights of two-day event.-By Our Reporter
