SHILLONG, JULY 27: Over 4000 schools across the state were hit with the first phase of agitation of the school teachers which started on Wednesday as a mark of protest against the delay of state government to provincialise their services.
A total of 14, 776 teachers of government aided schools under ad hoc, deficit system and deficit pattern, took part in the two-day sit-in-demonstration (dharna) called by the Joint Action Committee of All Teachers’ Association of Meghalaya (JACATAM).
In the state’s capital, the dharnas were held zone-wise which include Mawkhar-Jaiaw, Mawprem, Mawlai, Police Bazar, Laitumkhrah, Upper Shillong, Nongthymmai and others.
Similar dharnas were also held in the different parts of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills region.
The JACATAM for the three years has been demanding provicialization the services of teachers working in 4770 government aided schools in Meghalaya.
According to them, provincialization will ensure ‘equal pay for equal work’.
The demand also assumes significance after the Directorate of Schools Education & Literacy (DSEL) had submitted the proposal for provincializationof teachers’ services to the state government on February 29 earlier this year.
On contacting, JACATAM chairman ED Nongsiang said, “Majority of teachers have participated in the dharnas held across the state”
When asked, he informed that the JACATAM is yet to receive any official communication from the state government so far adding the agitation will continue as decided.
The two-day zone wise agitation will be followed by a district level dharna on July 29. “If there is no response from the state government, we will announce our next course of action on the third day (July 29),” Nongsiang said.-By Our Reporter
