SHILLONG, OCT 20: Meghalaya Higher and Technical Education director CP Gotmare said the scholarship for students, who are pursuing professional studies, will be released shortly.
“We have received the funds for the year 2014-15 from the North Eastern Council (NEC) as well as sanction from the state government,” Gotmare told reporters on Tuesday.
He assured the moment the fund under the state’s share is received, the department would immediately release the scholarship of the students. “We are hopeful that it will be done within a short time,” Gotmare added.
His statement came following the concerned expressed by parents over the government’s delay in releasing the scholarship, which has affected the students, pursuing their professional studies.
Earlier, the Financial Support for the Students of North Eastern Region for Higher Professional Courses (scholarship) was fully funded by the centre through the North Eastern Council.
The scholarship is meant to support students who are taking up professional courses like medical, engineering besides others.
When ask the reason of the delay, Gotmare said that this was due to financial change on the implementation of the scholarship adding this change has caused an additional financial burden on the state government.
Informing that till the year 2012, the scholarship was fully funded by the NEC, Gotmare, however, said, “From the year 2013-2014, it became 100 per cent from NEC for renewal only. However for fresh applications, it was decided that 90 per cent will be funded by NEC and 10 per cent will be from the state government.”
Again, the change came in the year 2014-15 onwards, it was decided that 90 per cent from NEC and 10 per cent from the state for both fresh as well as renewal, he added.
Gotmare also informed that the department is also in the process of moving funds for releasing the scholarship of the students for the year 2015-2016.- By Our Reporter
