Shillong, Oct 18: With the present Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) N Ramachandran retiring on October 31, the State Security Commission (SSC) headed by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma met Thursday morning and empanelled shortlisted five police officers from which one of them will be appointed the next Meghalaya DGP.
The SSC headed by the chief minister also includes Meghalaya home minister, chief secretary, and home secretary as its members.
Heading the selected list of the senior IPS officers is the Meghalaya DGP (Prison) Kulbir Kishan who is the senior most as he belongs to the 1976 batch. Following him is Subash Goswami of 1977 batch, Prem Singh of 1977 batch, B Kezo 1978 batch and D Kr. Paltan of 1979 batch.
Among the five names that have been selected by the SSC, Kulbir Kishan and Prem Singh have already served as the Meghalaya DGP. However Kishan was later posted as DGP (Prison) while Prem Singh was appointed as acting DGP till Ramachandran took over.
Speaking to www.ohmeghalaya.com, chief minister Sangma assured that the state government will strictly follow the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010. Without indicating who the SCC will appoint as the next Meghalaya DGP he said, “We want to see that the next DGP is not a stop-gap arrangement but a full-fledged one.”
Sangma, however, made it clear that the next Meghalaya DGP will be chosen on the basis of his record for “efficient policing” which he said is also one of the criteria of the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010. – By Our Reporter
