SHILLONG, JULY 21: The Jaintia National Union (JNU) and Meghalaya People’s United Front (MPUF) have served 10-day deadline to all illegal saw mills to immediately stop their operations in the different parts of Jaintia hills region as it is violation of a court order.
“We demand the owners of all the illegal saw mills operating in the region to immediately stop their operations within a period of ten days,” the two organizations said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
MPUF president Dapoi Wanmi Laloo said that the decision was taken in view of the concern that carrying out of such activities is in violation of the order issued by the Supreme Court on January 15, 1998. “Failing to comply with this demand, we would be compelled to take legal course of action against them,” he warned.
According to him, there are around 174 such illegal sawmills operating in different parts of the East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills District of the region.
“These saw mills are still supplying logs illegally outside the state,” he said while informing that the organizations had also submitted a written complaint to the authorities concern on the issue.- By Our Reporter
