Shillong, August 18: Opening up his heart as to why he joined politics Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that as a doctor he saw hardship faced by the people which drove him to join politics.
Speaking as the chief guest at the Rimsonian Meet 2012 at Hotel Pine Wood Sangma said, “Being a medical practitioner gives us an opportunity to get an insight on the social fabric, the social environment to which we belong and the society which we serve.”
Sangma informed that as a doctor before he prescribed medicines or even refer a patient to another doctor keeping in mind his/her economic condition. He felt that medical practitioners have to decide whether a patient can afford costly medicines while referring the patients to other doctors before prescribing expensive medicines.
Sangma revealed that “It is important for us to know these things about the patients and when you try to probe into this you actually see the reality and the truth around you. This enables you to see the plight of the people.”
Sangma claimed that this gave him an insight on the problems and hardships faced by the society and gave him reason to become a politician. – By Our Reporter
