SHILLONG, DEC 13: ‘Twenty-five long years – yet still a legend’- was scripted on a cake to mark the twenty-five years as a public representative of the Meghalaya assembly deputy speaker, Sanbor Shullai. He was elected five consecutive times as the MDC from Laban constituency.
Shullai was felicitated at a grand function organized by the Laban Dorbar Shnong on Saturday.
Members of the dorbar shnong, both old and young, attended the function to show respect and appreciation for his services and contribution towards uplifting the society and the people as an MDC.
The appreciation was shown through song, dance and acting skills by the residents of Laban to this political leader.
In a brief profile report of Shullai’s political journey read out before the gathering, it said that Shullai started his political career when he was elected as the president of the Hills People Union (HPU), Youth Wing of 22nd Laban LA Constituency in 1988.
Shullai was first elected as member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in 1994 on an HPU ticket and continued as an MDC undefeated from the constituency till date. He had also contested the MDC election twice as an independent candidate and thereafter contested on an NCP ticket.
Shullai’s motto has always been ‘service to God is to service to man’ which seems to have gone well with the electorates of his constituency.
It was only in 2008 that Shullai contested in the assembly elections ad was elected from erstwhile Laban constituency which has now been renamed as South Shillong constituency. He was also elected as the deputy speaker at the same time, a post which he continues to occupy till today.
Asked on the mantra of his success, Shullai said, “It’s a tough job to be a politician I must admit, but one has to be and work along with the people no matter how rich or how poor they are… the mantra is to serve the people.”
Shullai said the 25 years of his political journey is nothing but the love and trust that people have on his leadership. He said, “My decision to contest the MDC and MLA elections was based on the requests of the people.
However, recently one of the women ngos from the state has sought disqualification of those public representatives holding dual posts (MLA/MDC) through public interest litigation (PIL).
Shullai is one amongst the eight legislators in the state who is holding the dual post and named in the PIL filed in the Meghalaya High Court.
Informing that he has already filed an affidavit before the court, Shullia however said, “ Contesting the MDC elections was as per the constitution of the district council as nowhere it is mentioned that an MLA is liable to be disqualified if he wish to contest as an MDC. He said there is no bar for MLA to contest MDC.
Shullia said he will be waiting for the court judgment.
Earlier during the function, Shullai and his wife cut the cake to celebrate his 25th anniversary as an MDC and was also felicitated with traditional ‘Pailas’, ‘Spong’ and a ‘Ryndia’.- By Our Reporter
