Saleng to quit Cong; future uncertain

Saleng-Sangma1SHILLONG, JAN 21:  Community & rural development minister Saleng Sangma is likely to resign from the government and the Congress party following the denial of party ticket for the February 23 Meghalaya assembly elections to him. The Congress has fielded Besterfield N Sangma instead of Saleng from the Gambregre constituency.

It, however, is not clear whether Saleng would be joining another party or stand as Independent from his home seat. He told this website on Monday that he will decide on the issue of resignation once he reaches Shillong on Tuesday. He also did not contradict rumours doing the rounds about his impending resignation.

However, a source close to Saleng said he has decided to resign from the Congress, but was uncertain about joining another party or contesting as an Independent. Others said he could he could also betoying with an idea of floating his own political party, which though would be his last option.

Since the day the Congress list was out speculation about Saleng resigning from the party has been doing the rounds in the political circles. He had joined the Mukul Sangma-led Congress coalition government after the chief minister had dropped Augustine D Marak, Prestone Tynsong, FW Momin and Founder S Cajee from the cabinet for rebelling against him.

To keep his ministry afloat and keep his leadership within the Congress party intact, chief minister Sangma drafted Saleng into the cabinet. He had since then become very close to the chief minister, which explains why everyone was shocked when his name did not figure in the Congress list. By Our Reporter
