SHILLONG, OCT 9: Employees of the Mawmluh Cherra Cements Limited (MCCL) sought immediate intervention of the state government because of the failure of the company to pay their salaries saying that the ban rat-hole coal mining by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has affected the MCCL.
“We urged the state government to find out solution and save us and our family members from starvation,” Mawmluh Cherra Cements Employees Union (MCCEU) general secretary S Wahlang said in a letter to the chief secretary PBO Warjri on Thursday.
According to Wahlang, since the ban of coal extraction and transportation in Meghalaya by the National Green Tribunal, the cement factory had to stop its operation of the plant due non supply of coal. “Due to this, the company has failed to pay the salaries and wages for two months (August and September),” he said.
Earlier, the MCCL had cleared the salaries of the employees till July this year. Wahlang said the workers are facing economic hardship as they are unable to cope with the daily needs, besides the school, college expenditures of their children.- By Our Reporter
