SHILLONG, JAN 14: The election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Meghalaya will be held on February 7 along with fifty-five other Rajya Sabha seats in the country. The term of Rajya Sabha MP Wansuk Syiem will expire and a new Rajya Sabha MP has to be elected by the Meghalaya state assembly.
As per the Election Commission schedule, the results shall be announced the same day.
The elections will be held for the seats falling vacant between April 2-14 this year.
Syiem’s tenure as Rajya Sabha MP will also end in April and she had filled the vacancy created by then Rajya Sabha member and NCP leader Thomas Sangma who unsuccessfully contested the last assembly polls.
Besides Meghalaya, elections to the Rajya Sabha will be held in Maharashtra (seven seats), Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh (six seats each), West Bengal and Bihar (five each), Odisha and Gujarat (four each), Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan (three each).
Polling will be held in the states like, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Jharkhand (two seats each) and Himachal Pradesh, and Manipur (one seat each).
The polling notification will be issued January 21 and nominations will be received till January 28 and scrutiny will be completed on January 29. The last date for withdrawal of nominations will be January 31. The entire election process will be completed February 10, the poll panel said.- By Our Reporter
