SHILLONG, MAR 7: The state exchequer has collected Rs 20.03 crore as road tax during 2016-17, the Meghalaya Assembly was informed today.
Transport minister HDR Lyngdoh said the amount was collected upto January this year as part of the 2016-17 financial year. He also said that the corresponding figure during the year 2015-16 was Rs 17.99 crore.
Replying to a query raised by UDP legislator Titosstarwell Chyne, Lyngdoh informed that there were no vehicles which were running without paying road tax.
The minister said that verification of documents was being carried out by the enforcement wing and vehicles with no proper documents were accordingly penalized.
With regards to the STPS buses, Lyngdoh said that these vehicles are not paying any road tax as they are run by the government.
When questioned as to why should such vehicles not pay the road tax since they are actually run by private parties, the minister replied that the buses are run by the Urban Affairs department.
