SHILLONG, OCT 5: Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment and chief of the Republican Party of India (RPI) Ram Das Athwali will be visiting the state in October 7.
Informing this here on Thursday, RPI (A) Meghalaya State president John Sohtun said that Athwali will be meeting and addressing the partymen in Shillong during his first visit to the state.
He informed that the Meghalaya unit of the RPI was formed in Meghalaya last year with only 50 registered members.
Athwali is presently supporting the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.
With Meghalaya all set to go for fresh polls next year, RPI state general secretary Alfa F Kharkongor however said that the party is yet to discuss on matters relating to election.
“At the moment, we are not planning to take part in the upcoming election but we may decide otherwise later,” he said.
Whether the party would extend support to the BJP in the upcoming polls, Kharkongor said that it was too early to say on this.
Asked, he said that the party in the state is still in its infant stage and it requires to do a lot of ground works.
“We still want to work first and let people know about the party and its ideology,” he added.
According to the general secretary, the RPI which was founded by Dr BR Ambedkar in 1956, was revived by Athwali in 1999.
“The party’s ideology is based on the principles of Ambedkar which is socialism and securalism,” he said.
Kharkongor however refused to comment that the RPI which believes in secularism is supporting a party which is alleged to be communal.
