SHILLONG, JUNE 17: United Democratic Party (UDP) president Donkupar Roy has been recognized as the opposition leader in the Meghalaya legislative assembly.
The Meghalaya assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal on Monday issued a notification recognizing Roy as the leader of the opposition in the 60 member-Meghalaya assembly.
The notification stated that Roy has been recognized as the leader of opposition with effect from June 17.
During the last assembly session, the Meghalaya Peoples Forum (MPF), a conglomeration of smaller parties and an Independent MLA had projected Roy as the opposition leader but Mondal declined to accept.
The parties in the opposition bench includes the United Democratic Party (UDP), Hills State People Democratic Party (HSPDP), National Peoples’ Forum (NPP) besides an independent legislator Saleng A Sangma who is also the former C&RD Minister in the MUA – I congress led government.- By Our Reporter
