SHILLONG, JAN 2: The Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road expansion project is likely to remain incomplete because land acquisition in some places are yet to be finalized. The project deadline is March 2014 and PWD secretary SB Chyrmang informed that work in the stretches where lands have been acquired will be completed within the deadline.
But the major problem for the project comes in the stretches where land acquisition is yet to be completed. Chyrmang said that there are around twenty stretches in East Khasi hills that need where land has to be acquired and some stretches even in Garo hills districts.
Chyrmang pointed out that work is still going on in some stretches and the road will start from Upper Shillong till Tura. The work on the 264.30-kilometer Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road started in February 2011and the timeline to finish the project is March, 2014.
The project once completed would provide major relief to the people who have to travel through Assam to reach Garo hills since the existing Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura Highway is in a dilapidated condition despite the road being declared as a National Highway in 2004 and till date most of the passengers prefer to visit Garo Hills via Assam.
The estimated budget of the vital road project, which will improve connectivity between the eastern and western parts of the State, is Rs 1494 crore. Earlier PWD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar had said that the state can seek for more time provided it can produce substantial and reasonable reasons to the centre on the delay of the project.- By Our Reporter
