SHILLONG, OCT 31: The National Congress Party (NCP) Meghalaya unit on Monday announced its candidate to contest the upcoming December 13 district council bye-election from Mawprem-Laban constituency. The decision was taken at a meeting held in the party’s office at Kench’s Trace on Monday. “We have decided to field Ricky Shullai as the party candidate from the 15-Mawprem- Laban constituency for the upcoming bye-election of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council,” NCP general secretary Hardeep Ryntathiang said. Ricky is the newphew of sitting South Shillong legislator Sanbor Shullai, who had earlier resigned as MDC of KHADC following the passing of the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of Legislative Assemby) (Amendment) Act, 2015. Ryntathiang also said that the meeting unanimously decided the candidature of Ricky Shullai as the controversy of the dual post is still unclear. The meeting further decided that the entire party members shall start a full- fledged campaign to ensure that its candidate comes out victorious, he said. However, there was no mention about the party intention in as far as the other vacant seats in the KHADC and JHADC. Following the resignation of MLAs who are also holding MDC posts, as many as six seats in the KHADC and one in JHADC were lying vacant for past nearly one year.-By Our Reporter
