Ri Bhoi headmen call bandh

SHILLONG, MAY 13: Traditional chiefs and headmen in Ri Bhoi district has call for a 12-hour bandh on May 19 to protest against the government’s failure to pass the KHAD (Village Administration) Bill, 2014.

The decision was taken at a meeting convened by the Dorbar Ki Rangbah Shnong Ri-Bhoi District (DKRSRD) held at Umbuda on Wednesday.

The 6 am to 6 pm bandh will be effective in the entire district of Ri Bhoi, the meeting announced.

“We decided to take this step to protest against the government unwillingness to the pass the village administration Bill,” general secretary of the Dorbar C B Syiem said after the meeting.

According to him, the high court ruling passed last year, which strip off the powers of traditional heads, has affect the traditional institutions and traditional heads in the state.

He said, “The Dorbar had recently demanded the government to pass the Bill but unfortunately it decided to be silent on the issue, which only shows the lack of seriousness to end this present crisis by the government.”

Accusing the government of disrespecting the sentiments of the traditional heads, he said, “The government instead decided to come up with an ordinance which is just the opposite of what majority are demanding.”

“we will stand firm for the implementation of village administration bill and we strongly oppose the ordinance to be implemented by the state government, if the government is not serious on this issue, the Dorbar ki Rangbah Shnong will not called the bandh but further agitation will be undertaken in Ri-Bhoi District” Syiem asserted.- By Our Reporter
