SHILLONG, JAN 7: Even as the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure that use of muscle and money power are not allowed during the state assembly elections, it also demanded that reverting back to the manual voting system claiming that it is more transparent than the electronic voting machines (EVMs).
In the memorandum submitted to the ECI on Monday HSPDP president HS Lyngdoh said, “If many countries, particularly the USA where the majority of States still go by the manual voting system, it would be in the best interest of all and for fair elections, for India to revert to familiar and transparent system of manual voting in the ensuing elections in the stat.,”
HSPDP claims EVMs are open to tampering; malfunctioning and human controlled giving room for manipulation of the election result. It also suggested that counting should be done immediately after voting and result declare thereafter instead of waiting for a long gap between voting and counting which it said is peculiar to India.
The memorandum further called on the ECI to address use of money and muscle power during the elections. – By Our Reporter
