SHILLONG, MAR 8: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) today appealed to the Meghalaya government to restrategize its approach to prevent indiscriminate littering in and around the state capital.
“Despite the steps taken in this regard, Shillong is still filthy. I feel that we have failed and I also feel that there is something wrong in the approach,” UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh told the Assembly during the ongoing Budget Session.
While replying to Mawthoh, Urban Affairs Minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh assured that he would look into the matter and restrategize the approaches which include creating further awareness.
Lyngdoh also informed that as part of the move to keep those who litter at bay, so far, 20 violators were caught and penalised with fines ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 5000.
Moreover, the minister informed that the state is implementing and enforcing the provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
Speaking on the other measures adopted, Lyngdoh said that last year, new guidelines were notified for Solid Waste Management and cleanliness in Shillong.
He informed that since 2012, 827 public awareness programmes have been held to bring about awareness on safe disposal of waste and segregation of waste.
Moreover, he said 31,674 households have received two colour coded bins for segregation of waste and to dispose of the waste in collection vehicles to prevent dumping in open spaces.
Besides, he said litter bins are placed in important stretches of roads and warning signboards installed at strategic locations with security agency to monitor them.
The minister also informed that public notices prohibiting the practice of littering have been issued regularly and violators are penalized.
