SHILLONG, AUG 18: The Achik Indigenous Justice Initiative Forum (AIJIF) today sought the intervention of the deputy commissioner of North Garo Hills District into the delay in repairing of a 1 km road which was left in a dilapidated condition for past 20 years.
In a letter to the DC on Friday, AIJIF Director Alex K Sangma said the condition of the road from Mendipathar Post Office to Mendipathar Market was in a deplorable state causing inconveniences to vehicles and pedestrians of the area to travel through this stretch.
He informed that the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has sanctioned Rs 4.75 lakh during 2015-16 for the construction of a drain in New Colony, Mendipathar.
“However while 60 per cent of the amount has been withdrawn by the contractor Nekaram Marak in advance on November last year, the construction work is yet to start till date due to which water logging and sludge accumulation in the locality is at its peak,” Sangma said.
According to him, this has created a sense of discontentment within the people of the locality as the entire area has become prone to accident and highly vulnerable to waterborne diseases besides all these have led to filthy and abject living condition for the people of the locality.
“We urged you to take up the matter with the concerned authorities and redress this imperative issue expeditiously in the interest of the people of the area,” Sangma stated in the letter.
