SHILLONG, SEPT 11: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has asked the state government to ‘relocate’ the Harijans residing in the Sweeper Lane, Them Iew Mawlong as it said that it will be needing space for a new market complex.
“It is the demand to the government to relocate these people residing in the Sweeper Lane to a place already sanctioned for them,” KHADC chief executive member Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit told reporters on Thursday.
Basaiawmoit said the state government has allotted proper residential complex exclusively for them (Harijans) in recent years but the latter refused to shift and continued to reside in the Sweeper Lane area. He said the issue of relocating has come up because of the problem of congestion in Iewduh, the oldest and largest market in the state’s capital.
Basaiawmoit also said the KHADC along with Hima Mylliem are proposing to construct a new market on the land, which will be a permanent solution to the problem of roadside vendors and hawkers fighting for space in the name of livelihood.
“The proposed new market complex will be constructed with the aim to accommodate all the vendors and hawkers who are at present operating their businesses along the roadside causing public inconveniences,” Basaiawmoit said. He said that he has informed chief minister Mukul Sangma and the latter has assured look into the issue.- By Our Reporter
