SHILLONG, JAN 27: The Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) came down heavily on the police for arresting seven youths on mere suspicion of alleged links with Hynniewtrep National Liberation Army (HNLC) and demanded their release.
The organization even threatened to resort to agitation if government remains indifference on their demand.
On January 25, East Khasi hills district police arrested one adviser and linkman along with six other ‘over-ground-workers’ of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Army (HNLC).
The seven have been identified as Manbhalang Jyrwa alias Man, Bakmenlang Kharpuri of Mawkhar Block 6, Goldy Khongwir, Lawanbiang Dohkrut and Jolene Hazel Khongwir of Wahiingdoh Ria Mohan Lane, Stadpyrkhat Langstieh of Lum Shyiap, Golflink and Phaiborlang Donshiew of Sngithiang, Mawprem.
CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said, “Taking action and arresting the youth on mere suspicions is unfounded and cannot be tolerated as the duty of the state is not to pick up youth on suspicion and also not to use torture tactics. This act of the police will in fact create serious ramifications and might lead to bloodshed.” She said people do not want violence.
The statement released on Sunday said the organization is shocked that the police are making arrests of youth who are voicing their frustration in FB and who befriend SainKupar Nongtraw.
Kharshiing said, ‘We demand that the arrested youths be released since there was normalcy and no disturbance from the HNLC for quite some time.”
The statement further said that the center should be requested to call the group to come to the negotiation table so that there is no violence, especially before the elections, adding that the state must try its best to bring about peace as it is the failure of governance that is driving the youth to retaliate and revolt.- By Our Reporter
