SHILLONG, OCT 23: Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) chief Donkupar Roy today exuded confidence that the alliance of the regional political parties will form the new government in 2018.
“We are confident that the alliance will win 32 plus seats in the upcoming assembly polls and form the new government in the state,” Roy told reporters at the sidelines of a meeting held here on Monday.
The UDP has forged an alliance with the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) from the 36 assembly seats in Khasi & Jaintia Hills region and with the Garo National Council (GNC) for the 24 seats in Garo Hills region.
Roy, who is also Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, said that the alliance of the regional political parties is the outcome of the strong aspiration of the people of the state.
“It is also a fact that we are stronger by fighting the election together as a regional force rather than contesting as an individual party,” he said.
Asked, the UDP chief said that the regional alliance if voted to power will ensure a corruption-free government is formed in the state.

“The transformers in these villages have not been replaced after the old ones have damaged. There are cases if half of the village failed to pay electricity bills, the entire village have to face the brunt of electricity cut, which I feel it is a wrong policy of the government,” he added.
Stating that education sector is also one of the most important agenda, he said that the alliance would like to ensure that quality education is accessible to the students, who will not have to go outside the state in will pursue of higher education.
