SHILLONG, NOV 18: The Ri Bhoi Students Union (RBSU) on Friday demanded setting up of a government college in the district and as land measuring 12 acres is ready if the proposal is accepted.
A delegation of the RBSU led by its president Everyjoy Nongpoh met the Minister in-charge Higher & Technical Education Roshan Warjri to seek her intervention into the matter.
“We have urged the state government to consider setting up at least one government college for Ri Bhoi district,” Nongpluh told reporters after the meeting.
He said that there has been no initiative to provide government educational institutions since the creation of Ri Bhoi despite the fact that majority of students are coming from poor families.
When asked, the he said that the minister only assured the delegation that the proposal would be examined by the government and some time is required before taking a decision on the matter.
He however said that the union had also informed the minister during the meeting about the 12 acres of land that would be made available free of cost by the people at Umroi area.
“If additional land is required, the land owners have expressed their willingness to part away with their land for only half the rate to the government,” Nongpluh said.
Stating that they will follow up on the demand, he said that Ri Bhoi being the gateway to Meghalaya and North East region should also reflect development such as educational institutions for people from outside to see.
He alleged that the state government had neglected this important sector and instead concentrated more on promoting industries.-By Our Reporter
