SHILLONG, MAR 18: Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri informed that the police officer Nurul Islam, who had been accused of rape, is still absconding and effort to arrest him is still on.
Warjri told the assembly during question hours on Tuesday, “Steps have been taken by the police to arrest the accused cop however the efforts made has been not successfully.”
Warjri informed that a special task force was also constituted for taking up search operation to ensure that Islam is arrested. She said lookout notices were also circulated to all police stations in and outside the state as part of the lookout for the absconding accused.
Islam, a former sub-inspector, had allegedly raped two minor sisters inside Ampati police station in South West Garo Hills district with state police failing to make any headway towards his arrest.
Though a non-bailable arrest warrant against Islam was issued by a court the accused police officer continues to elude the state police.
Islam was placed under suspension from service and charged under section 376 (2) (1-a) IPC and section 6 and 10 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.- By Our Reporter
