SHILLONG, JUNE 6: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) and the Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) have renewed their demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) after chief minister Mukul Sangma told the all India chief ministers conference in Delhi on Wednesday that influx of people with “doubtful citizenship” into Meghalaya is a problem.
The two pressure groups said on Thursday that as the chief minister himself admitted the presence of “doubtful citizens” in the state during the conference now the government must implement the ILP recommended by the Lanong panel to regulate the inflow of outsiders into the state.
Both KSU president Daniel Khyriem and FKJGP president Joe Marwein feels that as Sangma openly admitted to the influx, his Congress led coalition government must not shy away from introducing the ILP in the state.
Of the eight north eastern states, Nagaland, Mizoram and parts of Arunachal Pradesh are implementing ILP to keep a check on influx into their states.
In the previous Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) regime also headed by Sangma as chief minister, the then deputy chief minister Bindo M Lanong ,who headed a committee on influx, had recommended last year that the ILP system should be adopted in the state to check the influx of illegal immigrants.
During the Wednesday chief ministers conference on internal security , Sangma had said, “Meghalaya has been facing the problem of influx of people with doubtful citizenship from the neighbouring states of Assam, Tripura and West Bengal.”
Sangma had also stressed on the point that influx poses a threat to the demographic structure of the state and the state government had created an anti-infiltration directorate to tackle the burgeoning influx problem more effectively.- By Our Reporter
