SHILLONG, NOV 11: A woman has sought legal action against a quack who allegedly duped her of around Rs 80, 000 claiming he could heal her ailing son. Bilen Suiam, a resident of Shangpung village in West Jaintia Hills District, lodged a complaint with the Raliang Police Out-post against one Tiarsing Shadap Mannar of Mootyrshiah village, for allegedly lying that he will cure her ailing son Phrangshwa Suiam.
In her FIR, Suiam said, “Mannar who is using telephone numbers – 9856606959 and 8118973350 has been taking money from her by lying that he would heal the sickness of my son.”
According to her, she had first gone to the residence of Mannar on June 18 and paid Rs 1500 for him to diagnose her son’s sickness by looking at water which she had brought from home.
“After looking at the water, he (Mannar) told me that my son’s illness was serious and that he could not cure him at his level but need the help of his Guru (Pa-stad) from Assam,” Suiam said.
When she called him to enquire when the treatment would start, Mannar told her that due to some strike going on in Assam his Guru could not come and that he would not agree to treat her son with just Rs 1500.
“He had asked me to pay some more money which was around Rs 13, 000. I paid this money, after taking loan from friends, with the intention that he would start treating my son,” she said.
According to her, as soon as she paid the money the quack went away and assured that the treatment would start from July 27 besides instructing me to put in place all the things that are required for the treatment.
However, the quack did not turn up on the said date with the excuse that his Guru met with an accident.
“Then, when I call him again, he informed me that the Guru has been discharged from the hospital and he would be coming one of the days. After this, the next day when he called again, he told me that I have to pay another Rs 65,000, which I did,” she said adding “It was after getting this money, Mannar disappear and even fail to response when call on his mobile phones.”
On August 26, when she called him he picked up and said that as promised to her he could not treat her son but he would definitely return back all her money, which never happen.
Suiam had to approach an NGO for help, which went along with her to his residence on August.
“This time, Mannar assured us that he would be able to refund the money only on November 5. Unfortunately till today, he is yet to return the money and has completely refused to respond to my calls and would only reply through text message (SMS),” she said.
Suiam, therefore, urged the police to take action against the culprit as per law of the land, for duping her money and violated her human rights.-By Our Reporter
