SHILLONG, DEC 22: The KSU on Thursday demanded that the district administration immediately put on hold the ongoing enrollment for Aadhaar in the Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) campus at Happy Valley.
The demand was made after the union reportedly received complaints alleging that non-genuine citizens were enrolled for obtaining the Aadhaar card number, which the KSU said is against the assurance given by the state government.
A delegation of the KSU-Nongthymmai Circle met the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills District Peter S Dkhar for his intervention into the issue on Thursday.
“We had strongly demanded that the district administration intervene into this and ensure that the ongoing enrolment drive is put on hold,” KSU-NC organizing secretary Richard Mawkhiew said.
He said that the union is not objecting if the enrolment drive is strictly for those working in the GTC but he said the union is concerned because of apprehension that non-genuine citizens are also being enrolled.
“As per our agreement with the state government, the enrolment drive should be conducted after creating awareness on the objective of the programme and verification from the local dorbar shnong,” Mawkhiew said.
He informed that the DC assured the delegation that he would immediately write to the SP to direct the officer in-charge of Madanryting to conduct a checking on manner the enrolment is being carried out.
“He (DC) also told us that he would also ask for the list of personnel from the GTC,” he added.
The union also demanded that the state government ensures non-indigenous people working in the state should enroll themselves in their own home states.
“The state government should take this up with the Centre for issuing necessary direction or notification,” he said while pointing out that people from the state working in different parts of the country had to enroll in Meghalaya for obtaining Aadhaar Card.
