SHILLONG, FEB 28: The biggest loserin the2013 Meghalaya assembly election is the PA Sangma led National People’s Party (NPP) as it was almost wiped out winning only two seats out of thirty-two seats it contested. Even its legislative wing leader and Opposition leader Conrad Sangma lost to Congress candidate Clement Marak in the Selsella constituency.
In the last assembly, the NPP had a total of twelve legislators. Ten of them fell by the way side and only two James Sangma- eldest son of PA Sangma and brother of Conrad- along with Nihim D Shira were returned.
The NPP Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya Thomas A Sangma who resigned from the upper house of parliament contested the North Tura seat but lost to Congress candidate Noverfield R Marak. He was relegated to the third position polling a total of 3817 votes. An Independent candidate Roger Benny A Sangma polled more than him as he garnered 4148 votes.
PA Sangma had split the NCP and formed the NPP Meghalaya unit. Of the thirteen legislators, all except Sanbor Shullai remained with the NCP.
Earlier the NCP led by PA Sangma won majority of its seat from Garo hills districts. However in this election, the Congress ensured that most of its candidates were defeated and in the end only two of its sitting legislators were elected.- By Our Reporter
