Jail break : Public notice to be issued to absentee police officer

Shillong, Nov 9: Meghalaya police  sub-inspector RA Sangma posted in Jowai failed to appear before the Justice Rajkhowa Inquiry Commission probing the May 31, 2009 sensational Shillong jailbreak.

Sangma is said to have remained “untraceable” for the last one year which made the Steering Committee against Murder of Democracy (SCAMoD) to suspect foul play by the police.

However, taking cognizance of Sangma’s absence the commission has directed the secretary to issue a public notice asking Sangma to appear before the commission in the next hearing.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, SCAMoD counsel Poonam Yadav said, “The commission had accepted our prayer by directing the secretary to issue public notice through an English and Garo daily asking Sangma that wherever he is, he needs to depose before the commission in the next hearing,.”

At the hearing, the commission had said that the West Jaintia hills district Superintendent of Police had informed the commission that the sub-inspector RA Sangma could not be served personally the summoning letter as he remained “untraced” from service for the last one year.

However, accepting the request made by the SCAMoD, the commission passed an order directing the secretary of the commission to issue a ‘public notice’ with regard to non-appearance of SI RA Sangma named as commission’s witness asking him to depose before the commission in the next hearing scheduled to be held on November 20.- By Our Reporter
