SHILLONG, OCT 13: An alert public led to the arrest of four gang members who were trying to flee with a stolen ATM machine having more than Rs 20 lakh inside from Upper Shillong on Tuesday.
Acting on tip off, Sohra police chased two vehicles – Tata Innova and Tata Indico- carrying the gang, who had stolen an ATM machine from the premises of M/S Morland Sootinck Service Station, Sohra in East Khasi hills.
The incident took place at around 1 am of Tuesday, when police was immediately informed by the public, East Khasi hills SP M Kharkrang informed.
While the Tata Innova (AS 01 B 0042) was intercepted by police at 7th Mile, Upper Shillong, the Tata Indico managed to flee away and later was left abandoned at Moodymmai, about 20 km from Jowai, West Jaintia hills district.
The four accused arrested from the Tata Innova have been identified as Hanis Ali (27), Bipul Pal (21), Mukut Ali (26) and Sareswar Kakoti (40), Kharkrang said, while informing that the ATM machine was also recovered from the vehicle.
According to Kharkhrang, the breakthrough was possible because of timely information of a public and participation of villagers of Lad Mawphlang, Mawkdok and Mawjrong.
“This was the same gang involved in lifting of ATM machines from Mawlai sometime back,” Kharkhrang said. According to him, the ATM machine is yet to be opened but SBI officials indicated that there is an amount of more than 20 lakh inside.
Meanwhile, Kharkhrang conveyed his sincere appreciation to the public who came forward to help police and expressed that this is a perfect example of a healthy police-public relationship.- By Our Reporter
