SHILLONG, JULY 25: Even as H Elias Higher Secondary School defeated Sibsing Memorial Higher Secondary School to emerge winner of the Under 14 Subroto Mukherjee Cup, 2015 South West Khasi hills protested against the Tournament Committee (TC) of the State Level Subroto Cup, 2015 for allegedly violating its own rules.

The Nativity Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat has threatened to lodge complaint to higher authority on the manner in which the TC is organized the tournament. The school staged protest at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex during the final tournament of the Under 14 State Level Subroto Cup, 2015 Football Tournament on Saturday.

The protest was against the alleged failure of the Tournament Committee to take action against the champion for allegedly reporting late during a match on July 23, which according to the protestors was in violation of the rules laid by Tournament Committee itself.

Nativity HSS, Mawkyrwat, is one among the school which participated in the football tournament and reached the semifinals in the five-day Under-14 and Under-17 State Level Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament for both Boys and Girls which started since July 20.

According to the protestors, on July 23, the match was scheduled to be played between the H Elias Higher Secondary School, Shillong Vrs Dreamland Academy, Ampati at 10 am.

However, H Elias HSS reported about an hour late and the game had to be rescheduled till 11.15 am, Team Manager of the Nativity HSS, Mawkyrwat F Lyngdoh told newsmen.

Quoting Rules and Regulation for State Level Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament for both Boys & Girls 2015, he said, “As per Rule 13 it has clearly stated that – in the events of any team reporting 15 minutes after the schedule time, that team shall be ‘debarred’ for future participation.”

Despite this rule, Lyngdoh said, “The Nativity HSS team however had to play the semifinals with the H Elias team, which was supposed to be debarred from the game on July 24, instead of Dreamland Academy, Ampati, which was awarded as the winner on July 23.”

“Notwithstanding the fact that we have also written an official complaint to them (TC), they however failed to take action on the matter,” he said.

The Nativity HSS also refused to accept the request of the TC during a meeting convened yesterday to discuss the issue.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the TC, CW Dunai had requested the Team Management of Nativity Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat to field the Team in the rescheduled match to be played between H Elias HSS, Shillong Vrs Nativity HSS, Mawkyrwat in the Under-14 yrs (Boys) category at 7.30 pm on July 24 at the Ground No 1 of JN Sports Complex, Polo Ground, Shillong.

“We outrightly rejected the request because the committee had failed to abide by its own rules,” Lyngdoh said while adding “The claim of the chairman of the TC that the H Elias team had submitted their inability to field their team in time because the team bus was caught in the traffic jam is not acceptable.”

He further alleged TC has also violated rule 12 which stated-“No request for postponement shall be entertained and teams are to field their players 15 minutes before the start of the match”, while Rule 14 states, “Each team is to complete their matches as per fixture and the team failing to do so will be fine Rs 1000 only and the defaulting team shall be debarred for 1 to 2 years from participation in Tournaments to be conducted by this office.”

Expressing his concern, Nativity principal Fr Roland Lyngdoh said, “We also made our stand clear that we are not against the H Elias School but we are against the manner in which the TC is organizing the tournament.”

“It is unfortunate that the TC is failing to implement its own rules thereby giving bad impression to the school students who were taught about honesty the best policy,” he said.

According to him, the school authority feels that rules are rules  and the ones who framed it should be responsible to ensure that they are being followed no matter what.

When asked, the principal said that he would soon consult with the school managing committee on the future course of action against such anomaly in organizing the tournament in the state.
