Prohibitory order near court

SHILLONG, JAN 22: East Khasi hills district magistrate has promulgated an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting assembly of five or more persons within 500 metres radius of the Meghalaya high court, carrying of arms and any other lethal weapons or any other item/material having the potential to be used as a weapon which can likely cause grievous injury of harm to any person or persons.

The order is a direct fallout of the recent High Court’s directing the appearance of the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in connection with contempt proceedings drawn against him by the court.

The district magistrate order said that information has been received that a huge number of people, including women, will accompany the CEM of KHADC to the high court premises which the district administration felt may lead to serious law and order problems resulting in breach of peace and disturbance of the public tranquility, a riot or an affray and danger to human life, health and safety unless prevented immediately.

The prohibitory order comes into force immediate effect and shall remain in force until further orders, the district magistrate said.- By Our Reporter
