SHILLONG, NOV 10: Former Meghalaya C&RD minister and Independent legislator Saleng A Sangma today demanded the centre to institute a probe by the CBI/NIA into the alleged politico-militant nexus rather than imposing AFSPA in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region.
“Instead of the promulgation of AFSPA, 1958, I strongly feel that the Centre could intervene by ordering for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the much-talked about politico-militant nexus to stem the rot emitted by militants and other criminal elements,” Sangma said in his letter to the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
He said, “I feel that no militancy/insurgency would survive without the backing of certain political leaders to further their own vested interests.”
Sangma also met and submitted the same memorandum to the State Home minsiter Roshan Warjri.
While joining hands with the concerned groups in demanding from the Centre not to impose the AFSPA in the region, he said, “Because this is not the answer to the problem. I think it is high time for the Centre to pull up the Meghalaya government for its inefficiency in tackling the law and order problem.”
“Therefore, I have also urged the Centre to intervene by ensuring that the state government acts in a manner as mandated by the Constitution of India in restoring peace and normalcy,” he added.
Stating that the demands put forth by the militants are not big, Sangma criticized by saying, “The state government is not at all serious and has even failed to address the peace accord with the militants and the situation has gone from worse to damn worse.”
He said this failure has not only led to mushrooming of militant outfits in the region but has also made innocent people victims of the two systems – state government and militants.
According to him, the recent order passed by the Meghalaya High Court which directed the Centre to consider use of AFSPA in Garo Hills, has come as a big slapping to the alleged lethargy functioning of the state government.
When asked, he said that the State Home Minister had informed that the state government is not in favour of the idea of bringing AFSPA and would approach the Centre for deploying of more forces to assist in tackling insurgency related problem in the Garo Hills region.-By Our Reporter
