TURA, JULY 7: In an historic event religious heads and followers of all faiths converged at Tura parade ground to pray for peace and harmony in Garo Hills.
An atmosphere of fear and apprehension had been prevailing in Garo Hills in general and Tura and the plain belt areas in particular in the aftermath of the unfortunate turn of events on June 21 mob carnage. The Inter Faith Prayer Service was organized under the initiative of the district administration, senior citizens, religious leaders, community and ngo leaders to create an air of goodwill, faith and trust to restore peace and reconciliation in the area.
The prayer service was opened by Rev GR Marak, President of the United Christian Peace Forum. Fahad Ali Ahmad, second Imam of Tura Mosque, Swami Durgeshwarnanda of Bharat Seva Ashram, Tura, Fr Janurius Sangma, SDB and Rev Bishop Andrew R Marak.
All the religious leaders and followers read sacred verses from the Quran, Bhagawadgita and the Bible invoking divine intersession to restore peace and reconciliation in Garo Hills.
The religious leaders also appealed to their followers to refrain from activities that may disrupt the peace process. The gathering later joined hands in silent prayer and sang the popular chorus ‘We Shall Overcome’.
A message from the chief minister Mukul Sangma was also read out on the occasion. Legislators Noverfield Marak and John Leslee Sangma, parliamentary secretary WD Sangma, KC Momin, Chairman of Tura Municipal Board, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo hills district Pravin Bakshi were also present at the prayer service. – By Our Reporter
