SHILLONG, OCT 7: The East and West Jaintia National Council (EJNC & WJNC) expressed its support to Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council chief executive member PN Syiem who resigned as Meghalaya Economic Development Council (MEDC) chairman as part of his non-cooperation movement against chief minister Mukul Sangma who got the bill forbidding holding dual posts- MLA & MDC- passed in the state assembly.
The EJNC & WJNC also slammed the Congress led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA-II) coalition government for coming up with the Prevention of Disqualification (Member of Legislative Assembly Meghalaya) Bill, 2015 and said the bill is not unacceptable to its party members.
“The passing of such a bill against dual post is a reflection of the dictatorship attitude of chief minister Mukul Sangma as he failed to take into consideration the views and opinion of the stakeholders,” leaders of the EJNC & WJNC said on Wednesday.
Their statement came a day after the Congress legislator PN Syiem decided to quit as the chairman of the Meghalaya Economic Development Council (MEDC) to protest against the style and functioning of the present government under the leadership of Sangma.
Syiem is the lone legislator who refused to relinquish the dual posts- MLA and MDC -and decided to fight till the end against the Prevention of Disqualification (Member of Legislative Assembly Meghalaya) Bill, 2015 passed by the state government.
The two organisations also alleged that motive of the government to implement the bill is to target the MLAs, who are also MDCs in the KHADC & JHADC, especially KHADC CEM PN Syiem.
The EJNC and WJNC expressed their support to the non-cooperation movement of Syiem against the present leadership.
“We are proud to have such a leader (Syiem) who took a bold stand to oppose the Mukul led government unlike the other MLA/MDC who have resigned and misled the people of the state,” the leaders said.
The seven legislators who have put down their papers include DCA Minister HDR Lyngdoh, Assembly deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai, HSPDP MLAs Ardent M Basaiawmoit and KP Pangniang, UDP MLAs Metbah Lyngdoh and Brolding Nongsiej and Independent legislator Stephanson Mukhim.- By Our Reporter
