Police warns action

SHILLONG, MAR 31: The state police have warned of initiating stern action against those indulging in sharing or circulating April fool messages, fake news, rumors, pranks or jokes about the outbreak of COVID-19.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Assistant Inspector General of Police (A) GK Iangrai said, “Under the relevant sections of law, forwarding and sharing of fake news and rumors is a crime, and strict action will be taken against those perpetuating these violations.”

“Furthermore, sharing or circulating of April Fool messages, pranks or jokes especially about the outbreak of COVID-19, the lockdown that has been imposed, the promulgation of curfew etc, will be stringently dealt with in accordance with the provisions of law,” he said.

The state police also appealed to all the citizens of the state to be more responsible and courteous during this time of crisis and to refrain from circulating or sharing messages which will create panic, confusion and disorder in the state.

The AIGP said the police department is working round the clock towards ensuring that the citizens of the state follow the social distancing norms and other advisories issued by the state government from time to time.

He however said that it was found that many citizens are not being responsible and conscientious at this time of tribulation and they continue to exhibit disregard to the norms that has already been laid down.
