SHILLONG, AUG 14: East Khasi Hills Police are gearing up with heightened deployment and drone surveillance for the August 17 hawkers’ eviction drive in Laitumkhrah and other scheduled protests, SP Vivek Syiem said on Friday.
Addressing the media, Syiem said the aim is to ensure all public gatherings pass off without incident.
“We endeavour to ensure that all these protests, eviction drives, rallies will be incident-free and peaceful,” he said.
According to Syiem, organisers of most events have taken permission and accepted laid-down conditions. Police will monitor the situation and scale up deployment if needed.
“We will assess whether the security personnel we have are adequate. We will respond as and when required. We can always pull in the reserves anytime,” he stated.
The SP also confirmed the use of technology for monitoring.
“We use drones for every mega event. Drones from the district will be put in place and yes, they will be used for surveillance,” Syiem added.
