Shillong, Sept 13: East Khasi hills police have filed a duping case of Rs 1.50 lakh that operated from sms and a similar case had also been filed in April when a person was cheated of Rs 80,000.
Additional SP Vivek Syiem informed that so far the East Khasi hills police have registered as many as five duping cases under the Information Technology Act.
“Cyber-crimes” cases are on the rise in the state as people are being “duped” through internet or smses masquerading in the name of “lotteries” and “donations” besides mobile services, police said.
Syiem told reporters Thursday, “Such crimes have increased over the years with people (even well-educated ones) continuing to be duped through internet”.
In 2011, a person was duped of Rs 5.65 lakh. Syiem has asked people not to get carried away by any mails or SMSs offering lotteries and donations as these are all “frauds”.
Syiem informed the modus operandi of the crime is that the fraudster would used a prominent “brand” names (Honda, Coca Cola, National Lottery) in the internet which would attract people thinking that these are genuine companies or agencies.
Syiem said that the police have also registered two such cases filed by “Airtel” where the company’s retailers were being cheated by such callers who posed as people from the company.” He said, “These frauds would asked the retailers to provide up to 5000 recharge and by doing so they would get offers in the form of “cars” from the company. He said retailers have to be alert from such callers.”
Syiem said it is quite a challenging a task to track such fly-by-night-operators.” However, he said, “Mass awareness on such crimes is needed to prevent people from getting duped in the future.” He asked people to immediately call up the crime branch next time they get such a call before making any payment on any offers. – By Our Reporter
