SHILLONG, AUG 12: An alert state police on Friday Liberation Council and Garo National Liberation Army and ULFA to break foiled a daring bid by the militants belonging to the banned Hynniewtrep National out of the Shillong District jail and escape.
The state police recovered ropes made out of bed sheets from inmates lodged in the Shillong District jail at Jail road.
Acting on intelligence inputs that some inmates were planning to break out of the district jail, a surprise check was conducted by the magistrate along with the police following which the ropes were recovered, East Khasi Hills district SP M Kharkrang said.
The militants belonging to the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council and Garo National Liberation Army and ULFA had connived to break out of jail by making ropes out of the bed sheets and these were seized, he said.
The militants involved in the heinous offence were lodged in the High Security Cell of Shillong District Jail.
The checking was conducted at around 2 pm at the High Security Cell premises and after combing the thick undergrowth behind the cell, knotted ropes of 16.5 ft length made out of synthetic woolen blankets were found hidden in the bushes near the rear wall of the High Security Area.
On further search, two improvised iron hooks were also found with a makeshift rope ladder hidden under an abandoned sentry post. When the bath room on the 1st Floor of the High Security Cell was searched, several torn strips of blankets meant for preparing the ropes were found.
All the items were seized in presence of magistrate and jail authorities. A case is being registered and investigation is on to unearth the conspiracy as to who are behind it.-By Our Reporter
