Shillong, August 19 : The funeral of former Meghalaya deputy chief minister John Deng Pohrmen will be held on Monday at Laitumkhrah Catholic cemetery at 2pm.
Pohrem passed away at his residence at Bhagyakul, Laitumkhrah Saturday evening. He was eighty six years old.
Pohrem has left behind his wife Margaret Rose Rapthap, four children and grandchildren.
Pohrmen was plunged into electoral politics in 1967 when he was elected as Member of the District Council (MDC) of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) as the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC) party ticket . Soon he took over as the Chief Executive Member of JHADC.
Nine years later Pohrmen contested the Assembly election from War Jaintia and was elected to the state assembly. He became a cabinet minister in the short lived DDPugh led three flag government.
Later on he along with the other APHLC leaders merged with the Congress party and went on to become ministers in various Congress led ministry and rose up to occupy the deputy chief minister post in the DD Lapang led Congress government. –By Our Reporter
