SHILLONG, MAY 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday lauded star-footballers from Meghalaya for their contribution in promoting the sports as he announced India will be hosting U-17 FIFA World Cup next year. “We are all familiar with the famous footballers – Eugeneson Lyngdoh, Airbor Khongjee and Marlangki Suting – they have done both the country and the state proud,” Modi said while laying the foundation stone online of the first ever international multi sports stadium at Ampati, the home constituency of chief minister Mukul Sangma.
Acknowledging the love for football by the people of NE especially Meghalaya, he said, “Football is a passion here and is being played in every nook and corner.”
While announcing that India is going to host the Under-17 FIFA World Cup in 2017, the PM said, “This will ensure development of sports not only in the NE but in other states of the country as well.”
Stating that Meghalaya has a large number of football clubs and associations, he said, “Perhaps the state can take the lead in organizing a series of major events leading to the tournament next year.”
Coming to the stadium at Ampati, Modi said that he was told that football mission of the state government is aimed at detecting talents at the grass root level and provide support to promising and professional footballers.
“I am sure that the football stadium which will be constructed at a cost of Rs 38 crore with the support of Ministry of DoNER will go a long way of fulfilling that objective,” he added.-By Our Reporter
