SHILLONG, OCT 7: Congress working president Pynshngainlang N Syiem on Friday said the party will give a good fight against coalition partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government in the upcoming 2023 polls.
Speaking to reporters, Syiem said the fight in many of the constituencies is between the Congress and other parties, who are part and parcel of the MDA government.
“If we have quality candidates, we have no problem to ensure that we give a good fight in the constituencies in Shillong City and other parts of the state,” he said.
Stating that people are fed up with the NPP-led MDA government, Syiem said, “It is high time for the people of the state to vote for the Congress party to ensure a different policy and regulation that will uplift the economy of the state.”
He further alleged that under the present dispensation, the state has witnessed problems related to law and order, price rise, school teachers and government employees being forced to hit the streets to demand for their rights. “That is why people of the state, especially in urban areas, are very much with the Congress,” he said.
Moreover, he asserted that Congress is accepted by people from different walks of life and communities.
“Be it tribal, be it non-tribal, Muslims, Hindus or Christians – all are for the Congress party,” Syiem added.
The working president also urged the people to vote for legislators who understand the importance of policy making.
Asked if the MPCC chief Vincent H Pala will be the face of the Congress in 2023, Syiem however said “Yes the state president will contest from Sutnga Saipung but we have not projected anyone as the chief ministerial candidate as that decision will be taken post elections. As per procedures those who win elections will form CLP and CLP will decide who will be the leader.”
Meanwhile, the Congress leader also condemned the police action to fire tear gas against agitating teachers while they were taking out a peaceful protest march to the secretariat.
