BANGALORE, APR 10: Former defender of Indian football team and Sport Authority of India (SAI) Bangalore based coach Aslam Khan advocated penalizing the referees for wrong decision and also having a monitoring body to review the referee’s decision to ensure a fair game of football in the Indian subcontinent.
Khan told this website on the sidelines of the ongoing second division I-League in Bangalore that the coach takes years to build up a team and the referee destroys the team moral and the result within minutes because of the flawed refereeing.
A member of the 1982 Asian game Indian football team Khan feels that the referee(s) must be penalized for wrong decision given in the field.
Khan said, “You see what is happening now is that the ball moves to some areas of the field and not to towards the goal, the striker is in the ground near the referee’s point, but the referee gives a spot kick which is really disgusting.” He said it is really disgusting to see that the referee who gave a wrong decision walks away free without anyone questioning his decision that leads to a team losing the game for no fault of theirs.
Two Shillong based teams- Rangdajied and Langsning- have also been victims of such wrong decision by the referee. Both the teams were denied penalty kicks when they really deserved to get it but, on the other hands, penalties were given against them when there was no ground for it during the ongoing matches in Bangalore.
Acknowledging the contribution of north east India to Indian football he said, “Indian football is indebted to North East as they boys from North East have dominated Indian football and every football clubs have players belonging from the region. He opined “Boys from the north east apart from being skillful are flexible, faster and the advantage is that their thigh are naturally build up”.
Speaking about Indian football Khan said India needs to develop football at the grass root level and until it does that football in the country cannot grow. He was of the opinion that India must have junior team exchange to other South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) countries and build in them the confident of beating other teams and gradually expand.
Khan said that at present the Indian team is not even confident of beating SAFF countries forget about other Asian countries.- By Suraj Joshi
