SHILLONG, APR 22: The twelve-hour bandh called by a banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on Wednesday evoked mixed response as it passed off peacefully with no untoward incidents.
The bandh which started from 5am to 5pm was called by the outfit to protest against the thr visit of BJP president Amit Shah visit to Shillong and also against the BJP ’s government at the Centre for its alleged atrocities on minorities.
The bandh, however, did not stopped Shah from meeting his party members, leaders of different political parties, religious organizations and ngos.
The series of meetings was held amidst tight security.
In Shillong , while shops and big business establishments in the major commercial areas like Iewduh and Khyndailad remained closed, small shops in the different localities operated.
Similarly major markets in other parts of the state also remained closed. Educational institutions including schools and colleges were also closed.
Vehicular movements were sparse as mostly government and some private vehicles and some taxis were seen plying on the road. The state transport buses were also seen plying in different parts of the city.
Almost all the state government offices including financial institutions were open.
“The bandh is peaceful and there is no untoward incident,” a police official said.
As per government figures, the percentage of office goers in East Khasi Hills District is 70 per cent, West Khasi Hills – 91 per cent, South West Khasi Hills – 93, East Jaintia Hills – 62, West Jaintia Hills – 92 and Ri Bhoi District – 70 per cent.- By Our Reporter
