TURA, APR 26: In a political turn of event for the upcoming Tura Lok Sabha bye-polls, MLA of Siju-Rongara and parliamentary secretary of C&RD, Rophul S Marak on Tuesday resigned as parliamentary secretary and is set to join the bye-poll fray.
Rophul will contest as an independent and will file his nomination in the coming days. The last date of nominations is on the April 29.
“I have tendered my resignation to the CM Dr Mukul Sangma from the role of parliamentary secretary and will contest the upcoming MP elections. I am ready to take on both Conrad Sangma of the NPP as well as the Congress candidate, Dikkanchi D Shira. I am confident that I will do well in the upcoming elections and am confident of winning,” Rophul said over phone when contacted.
Clarifying further, Rophul added that he “was unhappy in being a part of the Congress government in the state in an almost nondescript role. I now want to take on more responsibilities for the region and will definitely look to make my mark in Delhi.”
The move of Rophul to contest is definitely set to upset calculations of both parties in the fray as huge cuts are expected in both the camps with the Rongara-Siju MLA even being touted as the dark horse in the fray.
Conrad and Dikkanchi are both expected to file their nominations in Tura tomorrow, with Conrad expected at about 11:30 am while Dikkanchi is expected to come by 1:30 pm.
Another candidate, Panseng B Marak, (Panpan) has stated that he would file his nomination on the 29th of April, the last day.-From Our Correspondent
