After its meeting held with the officials of the department and also from Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), member of the committee Zenith Sangma told reporters that the PAC has observed that the implementation of the scheme has been very slow.
He said out of 1,564 villages only 146 was fully electrified in as far as Khasi-Jaintia Hills region which falls under the package-A of the scheme is concerned, while only 81 of 1923 villages in Garo Hills (package-B) could be covered so far.
Stating that they has already missed the deadline set on March 31, this year, Sangma said the department has now sought extension of time to complete the work till March 31, next year.
He said a total of Rs 657 crore has been sanctioned for providing electricity connection to 1,99,835 households in the eleven districts of the state.
It may be mentioned here that the project, which started in 2017, is aimed at cent percent household electrification through construction of a 11 KV line with ACSR weasel conductor, installation of distribution transformers and others.
Asked, Sangma said the PAC has directed the department to expeditiously complete the work within stipulated time. “The power department has assured us that they would be able to complete the work by March, next year,” he said.
