SHILLONG, MAR 12: Seeking information of the state government’s action on the Rs 4 crores outdated medicines bought under the National Health Rural Mission(NRHM) medicines UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh told the ongoing budget session of Meghalaya assembly on Thursday that administration of such drugs to patients is a ‘criminal act.’
Lyngdoh raised the issue of the alleged disposal of the outdated medicines during the question hour even as he sought information on the action of the state government against officials responsible for it..
Responding to Lyngdoh, Meghalaya health minister AL Hek informed that the medicines were bought under National Health Rural Mission (NRHM) during 2009-2010, 2010-2011 and 2011-2012.
On Lyngdoh’s query on action taken by the state government, Hek said a Fact Finding Committee (FFC) was constituted on February 12 and has been directed to submit a report within 30 days which will end on April 2.
Earlier while replying to a principal question, Hek informed the house that there was no excess purchase of medicines by the health department as procurement was made as per the assessment made from the Institutions. He further state that cumulative losses due to the expiry of drugs till date have not been assesed.
But Hek informed the assembly that the state government has constituted a joint procurement committee headed by the additional chief secretary for the overall assessment of the demand for medicines in the state. – By Our Reporter
